Aug 2007 - MOSMAN CARES FOR CAMBODIA

Over 200 people crowded into a Walsh Theatre at the Cremorne Orpheum Cinema last Thursday to support an evening event, entitled, “Caring for Cambodia – A Neighbour in Need”.

The evening, organised by Fran & Rob Ferguson and Martin Sims, regulars at Balmoral Beach, was to raise awareness in the community of the plight of people in Cambodia, a country which has suffered so much pain in recent years.

Two particular initiatives, which are supported by Fran & Rob and Martin and a number of other local residents were featured in an evening of films, brief presentations and Q&A opportunities.

The Hope for Children Orphanage in Battambang in the northwest of Cambodia, provides a safe and supportive environment for children who have been orphaned or otherwise traumatised, often as a direct result of AIDS. The Tabitha Foundation has for the last 13 years been working with the poorest Cambodian families to teach them self-reliance and to help them out of an endless cycle of despair.

Guests at the free event were invited to consider becoming involved in either or both of the programs featured, by donating a small amount from their own relative wealth to help provide hope and safety for a ravaged people. An excellent array of foods made by a willing band of volunteers was provided for guests.

A range of handmade Cambodian silk goods produced by women in the cottage industry supported by the Tabitha Foundation were on display in the theatre.

All costs of the event were met by private donations, so that people who wished to share in either of the two works featured were assured that 100% of the funds donated would go directly to those for whom it was intended.

People who missed the evening but would like to be involved in either of these humanitarian initiatives is invited to contact Martin Sims (9904-3338) for the Tabitha Foundation, or Fran Ferguson (9969-9112) for the Hope for Children Orphanage.
